The Michigan Association of Professional Landmen has scheduled the Seventeenth Annual Winter Mini-Seminar for Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Mt. Pleasant Comfort Inn & Suites Hotel and Conference Center, located at 2424 S. Mission St., Mount Pleasant, MI 48858. Our schedule for this year includes Melissa Greif from NuEnergy Operating, Inc. discussing entering and editing data, creating effective formulas (including calculating division of interest), formatting, functions, working with graphics, lists, tables, flowcharts, and various other Excel concepts; Tracy McMullen from Project Learning Tree giving an introduction to the Learning Tree initiative regarding Energy and Society, the organization’s purpose, how that relates to oil and gas professionals, and introducing the materials and techniques created to deliver the organization’s message; Sara Cunningham from Loomis, Ewert, Parsley, Davis & Gotting, P.C discussing recent audit activities of brokers in Michigan and the laws and regulations at the State level that impact independent contractor landmen; and, Alan Morgan from AAPL discussing the 20 Point Common Law Test that the IRS uses to determine whether an individual is an Independent Contractor or an Employee and give you ideas on how to better manage your business so that you may be less likely to come under audit. In the event that the Payor comes under a compliance audit, Alan will discuss protection provided under the Section 530 of the Revenue Act of 1978, the “Safe Harbor” Provision.”

Cost for the seminar is $25.00 for MAPL and MOGA members and $35.00 for non-members. Registration for the seminar will begin at 11:45 a.m. with a buffet lunch starting at 12:00 p.m. (noon) and the first speaker beginning at 1:00 p.m. The meeting should conclude around 4:30 p.m.
